It's Island Time: “Island Life Magazine 2013”

It's that time of year again: Island Time. Summer is back and so is Island Life Magazine. Here's a preview of this year's issue which takes readers on voyage through the Thousand Islands.

Readers of Thousandislandslife.com may recognize the aerial shot on the cover of Island Life Magazine 2013 taken by Thousand Islands photographer Ian Coristine. It's a photograph of a cottage which was designed as a Chesapeake lighthouse on Quebec Head on Wolfe Island, the largest Thousand Island.

This year's edition also features a number of new contributors including Singer Castle historian Judy Keeler who writes about Frederick Gilbert Bourne, the president of the Singer Sewing Machine Company who built the castle on Dark Island. Author and Thousandislandslife.com contributor Lynn McElfresh writes about her family's island life on Grenell Island, an historic American cottage colony near Wellesley Island.

The magazine features the photography of Coristine, the author of six books on the Thousand Islands and Ottawa author John McQuarrie, whose most recent book is The 1000 Islands Then & Now.

The incredible wildlife photography of Grindstone Island resident Martin Zonnenberg is also showcased in a photo essay titled Birds of the River. Photographer Doug McLellan, of Wood Isle, shares a spectacular night shot of the Lake Fleet Group called Starry Starry Night.

In this year's fourth annual issue, I write about The House of Seven Gables on Dashwood Island near Ivy Lea. Also known as Opawaka Lodge, the fabled estate is celebrating its 110th anniversary this year. The magazine also features stories and photographs about Cape Vincent, Wolfe Island, the Admiralty Group of Islands, Tremont Island, Boldt Castle's Heart Island, the Brock Isles, Thousand Islands boating and the upcoming Tall Ships Festival in Brockville this June 14, 15, and 16.

Island Life is distributed annually to 25,000 select subscribers in eastern Ontario and northern New York every May. Copies are also made available for $4.95 in Thousand Islands stores throughout the summer and available online at islandlifemag.ca. An online version of Island Life Magazine is also being launched this May.

The magazine is distributed in the EMC newspaper to select households in Brockville, Mallorytown, Gananoque and as far west as Wolfe and Howe Islands on Thursday May 16 before the Victoria Day weekend. It will be distributed in the Thousand Islands Sun in northern New York on Wednesday May 22 before the Memorial Day weekend.

Get out a deck chair and enjoy Island Life this summer!

Well Done, again Kim!
As always, I'm looking forward to my copy as soon as it's out. While I've take newcomers 'through' the intricate channels of the islands, Kim invites you ON the islands themselves, introducing you to the fascinating people who live on them.
Don't miss the boat!

For many years, my family owned "The Glimpses" on the southeast tip of Grenell.
I am just thrilled to find this link!
When we were on the island, Ellen McElfresh was a friend and I'm thinking that Lynn must be her sister in law.
Many, many happy times were spent on that island and I'll never forget when our dog followed us down the hill to the service at the chapel. She stood when hymns were sung and sat when we all sat down.
Miss those times very much.

For many years, my family owned The Glimpses on the south east corner of the island (right across from the Weehouse). Many, many happy times were spent there and I miss it greatly.
As a teenager, a good friend was Ellen McElfresh and I'm thinking that Gary was her brother--so Lynn must be her sister in law.
I now own an Inn in Ithaca New York and have framed a small drawing done by either Gary's mom or grandmother.
What a gem that island is!
