Yes, we have more news. National Geographic Event…Sea-Doo Ride...Boat Parade… and a Wedding Celebration.
David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes a the Clayton Opera House
The press release reads, “Imagine from the Sydney Opera House to Clayton Opera House…” Yes, David Doubilet who has presented his incredible National Geographic underwater images to appreciative audiences in Sydney, Austrailia, is also coming to Clayton on August 29th.
With David will be Jennifer Hayes, who is an aquatic biologist and photojournalist specializing in natural history and marine environments.
Jennifer and David work as a team, both above and below water, on project development, story production, feature articles and books.
Do a Google search on David and Jen and you will find some amazing underwater photography. What you may not know is that they live in the Thousand Islands.
On August 29th, they will take us on a journey at the Clayton Opera House, to the coral triangle of Papua New Guinea and the Gulf of St Lawrence where we will see the world of sturgeon, beluga whales, and harp seals.
This is one performance you will not want to miss! Also, tickets are on sale for a reception to meet David and Jennifer following the presentation. The proceeds from the evening will benefit the Thousand Islands Performing Arts Fund Endowment, at the NNY Community Foundation.

Ride the River for Prostrate Cancer
Calling all Sea-Doo riders in the Thousand Islands to get out on the River for a good cause this month. Ed Huck Marine in Rockport is inviting Sea-Doo riders to join an annual 1000 Islands Ride For Dad Saturday Aug. 23 to fight prostate cancer.
It is the second year the historic marina has participated in the nation-wide TELUS Ride For Dad. While other participants take the ride on motorcycles, ATVs and snowmobiles, this charity takes a ride on the River in the 1000 Islands near Rockport with participants aboard Sea-Doos.
"We are very excited about our partnership with Ride for Dad and the work they do raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer," said Peter Johnston, co-owner of Ed Huck Marine. "Although we have used our annual Sea-Doo ride to raise funds for various charities over the past 15 years, I think the Ride for Dad organization has been the most fun to work with. We had such a fantastic ride last year and were able to introduce some new riders to the sights of the 1000 Islands such as Singer Castle. Now we are hard at work figuring out how to top that ride on August 23rd!"
Pre-registration is online or register on the day of the event is 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Registration costs $30 a person. Minimum age is 16 as an operator. Registration will be 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Drivers meet at 10:45 a.m.. The ride will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. BBQ from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. along with determining the best poker hand and winner. The five stops are between the east end of Grenadier and Stave Islands though the route may be expanded if weather conditions permit.

Cliffe Craft Parade
The Thousand Islands Boat Museum in Gananoque is hosting a Boat Parade to honor Charlie Cliffe’s Cliffe Craft boats. (See Tom King’s “No son, It is a Cliffe Craft”…, November 2011.)
This month we received this lovely email: “I emailed you earlier that I had a Cliffe Craft boat and wanted to find a new owner for it. This is an update. I advertised it on Kijiji and had a response from Gananoque. The couple came to see RELAXER II, and agreed to give her a good home. Turns out they have three other Cliffe Craft and now four. They are working on the new Gananoque Boat Museum and plan to restore the hull which will become part of the display honoring Charlie Cliffe and his contribution to boat building in the 1000 Islands. This has been the answer to my wife and My prayers, our beloved RELAXER II will continue to bring joy and happiness to many people through this new museum. We are planning a trip for the celebration in August of the opening of the Cliffe display. I couldn't have asked for a more exciting place for her to be. Keep up the good work.”

Sadness then Joy
We learned recently that F. Sheppard Holt, 94, of Massachusetts and a summer resident of Grindstone Island, died Saturday, July 21, 2014. His daughter, Carolyn Holt Larson reported, “Shep was born on July 12, 1920 and died on July 19, 2014. He and Emily marked their 65th wedding anniversary this summer on Grindstone Island and he celebrated his 94th birthday by launching his beloved Bertram just one week before he died.”
He was a long time member of the Grindstone Island community and will be sadly missed, but his granddaughter, Anna Naomi Larson married Stephan von Muehlen on Long Point, Grindstone, on July 26. The couple are residing in Brooklyn, NY where Anna is an elementary school teacher and Stephan is a product designer. They met at the Antique Boat Museum when Stephan was demonstrating paper boat construction.
The mother of the bride shared the wedding photographs which were taken by Chris Szulwach, The Story Photography, Syracuse, NY. Their story describes how the beautiful bride (wearing Docksider deck shoes no less and her great aunt’s wedding dress from the 1930s) and groom took their vows while “All of the details of the day were pulled together by Stephan & Anna’s friends and family. A group of about 24 people took care of everything from decorating, to cooking up the delicious gumbo, to keeping everything on track schedule-wise. An amazing job accomplished by a fun group of people!” What a happy Island occasion after a sad week, but one that will be remembered forever.

We explained at that time, that there are costs to producing this monthly journal and I am pleased to report the many (over 50) readers stepped forward and pushed the Donate Button. At first we only had it linked to Canadian funds, but now it is linked to both. We have also been asked if we will accept checks, and we have set up a bank account to do so.
