Chris Murray’s “The St. Lawrence: Our River, Our Islands”
Photographer Chris Murray’s works will be on exhibit at the Thousand Islands Arts Center in Clayton this summer.
“For this exhibit I decided to focus on the natural beauty of the Thousand Islands region. I have selected pieces that showcase the water, the rocks and trees, as opposed to the bridges and castles, the ships and lighthouses. I wanted to draw the viewer's attention back to the natural elements that make this place so special.”
The show titled; The St. Lawrence: Our River, Our Islands, all photographs sold will benefit Save The River and the TI Arts Center. The opening reception is on Thursday, June 18 from 5-7pm.
TI Life readers were first introduced to Chris in Chris Murray Photography, in July, 2010 and then in January, 2011 he wrote Thousand Islands Rocks, providing a unique perspective on the Island’s geology. In December 2013, Chris won our Thousand Islands Life Photo Contest and in February, 2014 he provided a lesson in Not Just Black & White.
Thankfully, Chris often shares his beautiful photographs with “TI Life” on Facebook. His unique shots of the Adirondacks and the Canadian Rockies are also outstanding. All can be found at Chris Murray Photography.

Scott Ouderkirk’s work featured in Washington DC. May 1 – July 31, 2015.
The American Glass Now: 2015 exhibit is the American Glass Guild’s fourth juried exhibition of contemporary glass and held at the Washington National Cathedral, DC.
Scott is an artist, author and craftsman who made the good decision to move his studio to the River. (291 River Rd, Hammond, NY) He graduated from SUNY Oswego (BS in Technical/Vocational Ed), Syracuse University (MA in illustration) & the University of Hartford (MFA in illustration).
An author of several books, The Wind in the Islands, has already become a favourite for Island bookshelves. (See NCPR Review)
The Washington exhibit celebrates the third time Scott’s work was chosen. First was in Pittsburg, PA, second in St. Augustine, FL and now in Washington.
Take a close look at the photograph of the “Queen,” Scott credits Marty Snye, of The River Forge, in Morristown for setting the piece in iron work.
Scott’s “TI Life article”, Life After Death for a Wooden Boat, was published in December 2013 and is a must-read for antique boaters!

Important Toronto Exhibition of Mallorytown Glass
Thanks to the 1000 Islands Heritage Society in Mallorytown, ON, a rare collection of Mallorytown Glass will be on display in the west wing of the Ontario Legislature, until July 15, 2015. The Mallorytown glass was manufactured at Canada’s first commercial glassworks, just west of Mallorytown, Ontario, from 1839 to 1840.
The glassworks was established by Amasa Mallory, following a long-standing decree from King George III, that there be no manufacturing in the colonies which would be in competition with British industries. Articles produced at the glassworks were generally utilitarian, including pitchers, plates, bowls, glasses, bottles and other table wares. One particularly impressive example is a 66 cm. long glass fork currently in storage at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau.
The local group collected seven artifacts located in the Thousand Islands for the exhibit, including the extremely rare Mallorytown Pitcher (courtesy of the Arthur Child Heritage Museum, Gananoque), a beautiful piece of cullet (Springfield House, Escott), dross (Mallory Coach House, Mallorytown), as well as pieces from local collectors. In addition, there will be a replica footed bowl and full descriptions of all pieces in both English and French.
The project spokesman is local historian and graphic designer, Brian Phillips. He described this effort as “a remarkable display of cooperation and trust between three municipal governments of the 1000 Islands, private collectors, and heritage groups. All the exhibitors were proud to exhibit these important pieces of our local history in such a prestigious venue. Through this exhibit, we hope to raise awareness of our nationally-important heritage site in Mallorytown and to encourage tourism and future economic development in the area, based on our unique heritage. This is an exceptional opportunity to showcase this largely unknown facet of 1000 Islands history."

Marie Anne Erki
This month, through July 4th, Marie Anne Erki’s paintings are on display in the foyer of the Davies Foundation Auditorium, Domino Theatre, 52 Church St., Kingston ON.
Better known as Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering, on the campus of the Royal Military College of Canada, in Kingston, Marie Anne is gaining an appreciative audience for portraiture and genre paintings in oils.
"Growing up in Montreal in the ‘60s,” exclaimed Marie Anne, ”I had two major influences in art, my mother, a pastel and oil painter, who studied with Jacques de Tonnancour, and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) program for young people, run by Arthur Lismer. I spent some of the best Saturdays of my young life at the MMFA school. This was the genesis of my life-long passion for art. My facility in drawing led me initially to architecture, but I went instead into structural engineering. Both disciplines involved, at a time before computer assisted drawing (CAD), a huge amount of freehand and mechanical drawing. So essentially my professional training always required me to draw, and, during my structural engineering career. I did some occasional oil and watercolour painting. I retired early to pursue painting full time."

Visit the Frederic Remington Museum this summer
The Frederic Remington Art Museum, located at 303 Washington Street in Ogdensburg, New York, houses a comprehensive collection of original Remington paintings, sketches and sculptures, as well as a broad array of personal effects and correspondence that serve to bring the artist and his vision to life.
Many of Remington's best-known sculptures and oil paintings can be found in the Albert Priest Newell Gallery. Changing exhibits of his North Country and Canadian watercolors, sketches, and illustrations hang in the Addie Priest Newell Gallery. Personal possessions, studio equipment, and memorabilia are displayed throughout the museum.
