Music & Art in Clayton

July 17th will be a special day in Clayton.  Two regional arts organizations, the Clayton Opera House and  the Thousand Islands Art Center ~ Home of the Handweaving Museum, will present Reflections to an appreciative audience.   Pianists Ariana and Pari Barkeshli will bring their talents to the Clayton Opera House stage on that Friday evening for an original multi-media performance uniting piano and art.

In 2008, the Clayton Opera House drew more than 8,000 enthusiastic patrons from across Northern NY, Canada and beyond. On July 17th, 2009 The Clayton Opera House and the Thousand Islands Art Center ~ Home of the Handweaving Museum, will present  Reflections. Pianists Ariana and Pari Barkeshli will perform.

Reflections, July 17, 2009

The Barkeshli sisters will perform compositions for four hands on one piano by Rachmaninoff and Schubert for the first half of the performance.  After intermission, Ariana will perform Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition” as it was originally composed; a suite of ten piano pieces.

This multi-media performance will combine the visual arts and piano to celebrate the inspiration found along the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Pianist Ariana Barkeshli, an Iranian-born artist now living in the U.S., will bring Modest  Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ to life as it was originally intended – a suite of 10 piano pieces. As a backdrop to the performance, artwork created by Thousand Islands's regional artists will be projected.

The Russian composer, Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (1839–1881), wrote "Pictures at an Exhibition" after being inspired by drawings and paintings of his dear friend Viktor Hartmann.  When Victor died suddenly in 1973, Mussorgsky, deeply depressed, overcame his grief when he visits a memorial exhibit of more than 400 of Hartmann’s works.  Mussorgsky’s composition depicts an imaginary tour of Hartmann’s exhibition. Over the years a performance of Mussorgsky’s work is often accompanied by artwork. This summer this will occur again at the Clayton Opera House with their production of Reflections.
