TI Life in August

August in the Thousand Islands – The lazy hazy crazy days of summer… boat shows, regattas, fishing and, of course, corn on the cob.  Also, outdoor events, theatre productions, worship services, and family reunions.  It is also your opportunity to learn about those municipal issues that affect your region of the Thousand Islands. Please do so and let your voice be heard.

Regular Contributors

Kim Lunman, Michael Folsom, Brian Johnson, James Rappaport and Ian Coristine each provide an article about the summer and the River.

Kim commemorates good deeds in A Fraternity of River Rats – the Admirals.  Michael provides insight into naming boats in What’s in a Name.

Brian, Ian and James bring a different slant to the St. Lawrence Seaway fifty years later.  Brian tells the story of the Lost Villages, whose foundations are now underwater;  Ian tells how he discovered those foundations from the air in Lost Villages, Another Perspective.  James introduces us to The Goby and the Bass, – describing the Goby, now caught daily in the Seaway, having been introduced in ballast bilge water...

New Contributors in August

Lynn McElfresh came to Grenell Island for the first time to meet her fiancé’s family in 1975. Lynn became part of the family and the island became part of her life. Lynn and her husband, Gary, spend their summers in the 1000 Islands and their winters in Dunedin, Florida. Lynn is the author of Can You Feel the Thunder? Published in 1999 in New York by Simon & Shuster Children's Publishing Division. It is suggested for youth ages 10-14.  She is also the ghost writer for several other children’s books.

Douglas Goodfellow is well known in the Admiralty Islands, first discovering the St. Lawrence Islands National Park islands as a cruising sailing family and now a Lindsay Island resident. Doug serves as president of the Half Moon Bay Foundation, and serves on the board of the Arthur Child Heritage Museum in Gananoque. The Goodfellows live in Montreal where Doug is vice chairman of Goodfellow Inc. a wholesale lumber manufacturing and distribution company.

Rachel Cole is a fourth generation Murray Islander - and as Rachel will tell you, she was able to "tie a cleat before learning to tie her shoes". She has worn the hats of maintenance crew, tennis court prep, postal clerk, assistant fire chief and secretary on Murray Isle.  And she has also told us that she “can still tie a cleat, but rarely wears shoes!”

We pay tribute to Tom Schwalm

Thousand Islands Life pays tribute to Tom Schwalm who died suddenly on Thursday, July 30, 2009 on Wellesley Island.  In 2001 Tom, with his wife Jo Ann, became owners of both old and new courses at the Thousand Islands Country Club as well as a large parcel of land which was targeted for major development. Their Lake Course is one of the oldest courses in the U.S., built in 1894 and subsequently redesigned by famed golf architect Seth Raynor in 1924, it was once part of the George Boldt estate. Tom and Jo Ann's love for the region helped preserve this section of Wellesley Island. They have many friends and admirers who greatly appreciate their efforts and their passion for quality both in their business and personal lives.  Tom gave much to the community. He was an active member of the board at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton and supported dozens of organizations in the region.  He will be greatly missed by all.
