TI Life in June, 2012

Summer is here and the swimming has begun!  There are a number of festivals, reenactments, art shows and music festivals to keep everyone busy.  Enjoy them all!

Bud Andress provides a primer on Flag Etiquette in the 1000 Islands while Liz Huff tells how Queen’s Jubilee reaches Leeds and the Thousand Islands….

Michael Folsom, who is the creator and organizer for the 2nd Annual Sailing Seaway Clayton weekend in June, found time to share his special story, I am proud to be known as "The Ship Watcher."

Lynn McElfresh captures It’s about the Grenell Island Store…  “People on the island had such attachment to that store”, writes Lynn, “I hope I am able to capture this very special history.”

Kristen Taylor presents her third article Taking the Plunge… River Yoga’s Liz Price-Kellogg, a story of another who chose a year-round Thousand Islands life.

We bring music to the Islands in Joan Russell’s A Wolfe Island Ceilidh (pronounced Kay Lee)  and Peg Dolan’s Where did it all begin? Underwater music…  with two music videos produced by Dennis McCarthy.    Nature lovers will appreciate Sarah Miller’s If Minna Anthony Common had a Blog… and Corinne Mockler’s Out in the Open.

I present an interview with author,  Silvana Gargione, who has written a children’s non-fiction book St. Lawrence ABC’s… for everyone.  The book is illustrated by Megan Gaffney and is charming.

New Contributors

	Joan Russell - A Wolfe Island Ceilidh Joan Russell (PhD) was Associate Professor and Director of Music Education at McGill University, Montreal. In this capacity she gave conference talks, carried out research, published in academic journals, served as journal editor and peer-reviewed editorial boards. Among the more exotic destinations her work took her were Bahrain, Brazil, Nunavut, Cuba and Scandinavia. She is working on tracing her Wolfe and Amherst Islands’ roots as well as a social history of small-time Canadian vaudeville in rural Canada in the1930s. She writes, “Retired from McGill since 2010, I plan to take up residence in Victoria, BC, in 2012, and will continue to water my Island roots each summer.”
	Peg Dolan - Where did it all begin? Underwater music… Peg Dolan spends her summers in Cape Vincent.  She  has several CDs to her credit: Home, The Missing Peace, Four Green Fields, Now and Then, and a just released virtual CD, which is available, by download only, from CD Baby and soon from Amazon.com and ITunes.com. It is called “Peg Dolan’s Irish Pub Crawl.” Her present Irish band “Wingin’ It” also released a new CD this past March called, “The Boys Won’t Leave the Girls Alone.” It is available at performances and at the Irish Import stores in Rochester, NY, Barry’s Old School Irish Pub and Hatter’s Pub in Rochester and Webster NY, respectively. Peg has also appears as a backup singer on CDs by Jeff Riales, and the Dady Brothers of Rochester.
	Sarah Miller - If Minna Anthony Common had a Blog… Sarah Miller and her husband Chase enjoy their time on both Wellesley and Murray Isle. Both were seasonal employees of the Nature Center for several summers.  When they are not on the River they are in New York City. In addition to enjoying the flora and fauna of the islands Sarah is also interested in the history of the area. She writes, “I am also proud that I can support our island post office by buying all my stamps on Murray!”
	Corinne Mockler - Out in the Open Corinne is responsible for developing and managing the Thousand Islands Land Trust  TILTreks & Talks program, as well as community outreach and development. She grew up in rural Maine and earned her BFA in advertising and graphic design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She has also taken classes in horticulture from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. She earned a Permaculture Design Certificate from the NY Open Center. It was the basic theory of Permaculture that really hit home for Corinne: “Care of People. Care of Planet. Return of Surplus to Both.”  Although only completing her first month at TILT, she has already helped design programs that will allow many to enjoy those special places in the Thousand Islands that we call, Open Space.

One in a Thousand

The whole creative team for One In a Thousand, Ian Coristine’s interactive iPad eBook, celebrated its launch at The Ivy Club in Ivy Lea on Saturday June 9. The V.I.P. (Very Islander Person) cocktail “bash” was organized by Kim Lunman, owner and publisher of Island Life.

Kim invited the River community who support her print magazine as well as those islanders whom she interviewed for Island stories over the past four years.

During the evening Ian introduced his collaborators, Donna Walsh Inglehart, co author, Doug McLellan and Caroline Yung, from McLellan Interactive Publishing and special guest Tony Dekker, the lead singer from Great Lake Swimmers.

Joe and Lucie Pal, owners of the Ivy Lea Club, graciously sponsored the event providing wine and appetizers from the Ivy Restaurant.

This week we learned that One in a Thousand was reviewed by Kirkus, which was founded in 1933 and bills itself as "The World's Toughest Book Critics." They released their review of One in a Thousand on http://bit.ly/LyRAEP…. They loved it! 

We also learned that Kim's 2012 edition of Island Life was distributed to 25,000 households in New York and Ontario in May and already islanders are asking about the next issue.  A souvenir Islander's Edition of Island Life Magazine 2012 is also available at stores throughout the Thousand Islands this summer and online at www.islandlifemag.ca

The use of COPYRIGHT material …

One of our authors discovered that a new, Thousand Islands history book has photographs and text that she had originally written for our e-zine.  Apparently, the new-book author had not asked for permission to publish her material, only putting her name under "Acknowledgements" and with no reference to her specific material.

Over the past five years TI Life has published over 500, illustrated-with-photographs, articles -  by more than 100 authors. Often, we have had to search really hard to secure permissions for material. Usually, the owner kindly gives permission.  We are vigilant in putting in photo credits!  At the bottom-left corner of our webpages is a tag, Copyright 2007 by Thousand Islands Magazine | Terms Of Use .

I  feel badly for our author(s) when proper permission(s) are neither requested nor secured.

Ian Coristine (photographer extraordinaire), webmaster Mike Cox, our authors, editors, and proofreaders. who get TI Life to you each month, do so on a volunteer basis. We do not accept advertising and are  definitely a not-for-profit organization!

As we begin our 7th year, I encourage you to:

• Enjoy each and every article.
• Send our link to your family and friends. We want to spread the word about the Thousand Islands, around the world.
• Print out the articles if you wish to read and enjoy them on a dock or in a cockpit.
• Join our Facebook page to see the photographs our readers share.
• Link to Twitter, as we send out “bits of news” throughout the month.
• When you think about “copying an image” think twice!
  
• If you want to copy an image, or text, ask us. We might just say, "Yes"!

Excursions:  This is our newest section.  We added an excursion to a Tea Room in Yarker Ontario, this month.  (Well worth the excursion.)
